you cannot

harm me

the gladiator

Borderlands is a series I played co-operatively with friends but I knew of Athena before we did so because I had encountered her in the Telltale spinoff. She and her fiancée Janey were absolutely my favourites there - "76% sunshine, 24% vengeance" has lived in my head rent-free ever since as a perfect descriptor of fictional women I enjoy - and this was something that persisted as I played through Borderlands 2, and later Pre-Sequel, where Athena is playable.

The thing is, I didn't like Pre-Sequel that much. Or, more specifically, it didn't like me: it's very rare games can trigger my vertigo but Pre-Sequel's low gravity movement in first person out in the cold vacuum of space successfully did it. Yet I persisted. I even took up a role I was not overly comfortable with and gave up my sniper rifles for shotguns and Athena's incredible shield. I would simply yolo into a crowd of enemies and live. She was an utter blast to play as.

She has a rough exterior but a supersoft heart. She's a mercenary. She's here for the work and the money, that's her main motivation. But Handsome Jack is an egomaniac and well, Pre-Sequel is how Athena and Janey met and fell in love and I was so happy every time they got to interact. Where is my lesbian wedding, Gearbox. It's only fair. [Athena / Borderlands]

i welcome your attack, fools.
