helps me walk my path

i'll keep my head up high

someday i'll find you with open arms

Serah was not the first time I gravitated towards a sidelined minor character. Everything you see of her in the original XIII occurs before the narrative begins, but that determination and resolve in the face of the impossible was so familiar to me and she quickly became my favourite. Along with Hope, it was her reveal for the cast that renewed my interest in XIII; when you're a teenager, three years to wait after an announcement is very long.

She was the first instance of me exploring a character's potential for myself - not in fanfiction, but with RP on Livejournal and later Dreamwidth. I dug deep. I fleshed her out from the traits she exhibited, and those around me came to be interested in her too. XIII was a game I loved, and a sequel excited me - but more than that, it was a sequel with Serah as the main protagonist.

It still shocks me to this day that Serah made it. This is not something Square Enix does with their feminine leads - never. Never again. X-2 was perhaps the last time but Yuna was familiar, Serah was not. And everything I had described of her, read from her; I was right. It's so gratifying to get to understand a character well and be backed up for it. I love Serah very much. She was my number one favourite for over ten years, and is still so important to me. [Serah / Final Fantasy XIII]

i'll make it through.
